As a child artist she started the career. Her hit film was "Masoom" directed by Shekhar Kapoor and film was released in 1983. As an actress her first Hindi film was "Bade Ghar Ki Beti" but she was in focus from the film "Chamatkar" performed with Shahrukh Khan. She normally team up with Ram Gopal Varma, who is a film director. Her first film with Ram Gopal Varma was "Antham" which was in Telugu. Urmila gives many hit films which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma such as Telugu film "Gaayam","Rangeela" released in 1995, "Daud" in 1997, "Satya" in 1999, "Kaun" in 1999, "Mast" and "Jungle" in 2000, "Pyar Tune Kya Kiya" in 2001, "Bhoot" 2003 and the film "Ek Hasina Thi" which was released in 2004.
