Full name, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, professionally known as Shakira is a Colombian singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, dancer, and philanthropist who emerged in the music scene of Colombia and Latin America in the early 1990s. Born and raised in Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira revealed many of her talents in school as a live performer, demonstrating her vocal ability with rock and roll, Latin and Middle Eastern influences with her own original twist on belly dancing. SHAKIRA SUPPORTS ILLEGAL MUSIC DOWNLOADERS

SHAKIRA has waded into an ongoing U.K. debate over illegal downloads - insisting the controversial practice brings her 'closer to her fans'.

Lily Allen spearheaded a campaign last month (Sep09) to stop illicit file-sharing and called on the British government to help beat illegal downloaders, who she fears will destroy the music industry.

Sir Elton John, Annie Lennox and George Michael backed her protest - but the Whenever, Wherever hitmaker, who has sold millions of records worldwide, is sympathetic to illegal downloaders.

Shakira tells Sky News, 'I like what's going on because I feel closer to the fans and the people who appreciate the music. It's the democratisation of music in a way, and music is a gift. That's what it should be, a gift.'

Allen is adamant the practice means artists just starting out in the music business will struggle - but singer Nelly Furtado has also joined the debate, insisting losing sales is irrelevant to success.

She adds, 'If you love music you're going to make it anyway. You'll find an audience, and you may not make like millions of dollars but you'll make enough to have a house and a family and a car.'

Shakira is eyeing a musical collaboration with actor Robert Pattinson after falling in love with his vampire movie 'Twilight'.

The singer was introduced to 'Twilight', after an executive at her record label noticed its themes are similar to those explored on her upcoming album, 'She Wolf', reported contactmusic.com.

'The president of my label said, 'Have you checked out Twilight? It's about wolves and vampires and things.' And I'm like, 'Ah, that's up my alley. I mean, where is it?' And I watched it and loved it,' said Shakira.

The singer then insisted that she would love to duet with Pattinson, who played piano and recorded vocals for two songs on the 'Twilight' soundtrack: 'I've heard he's a great singer and a great musician.'

Shakira is 'not dumping her record label'

Pop superstar Shakira has denied that she is planning to dump her record label.

The Colombian star has been dogged by rumour that she is unhappy with executives at Epic records, with Internet gossips claiming that she has been courting other labels.

However, a publicist for the Grammy Award-winning singer insists she has no plans to leave her musical home, calling reports of a rift with Epic bosses "not true".

"(The rumours are) not true. She's very happy at Epic," Contactmusic quoted Shakira as telling the New York Daily News.
